Entrance to the town
Yapeyú is a historic town for two main reasons: the Jesuit Mission that was founded there in the early 17th century and because it is the birthplace of General José Francisco de San Martín, the famous Argentine revolutionary.
Yapeyú town is located on the east of Corrientes, a province in the north east of Argentina. It is settled on the banks of the Uruguay river.
The Jesuits built this settlement and transformed the village into an important agricultural, cultural and manufacturing centre, with 80 heads of cattle, a shipyard and a literature and music school. The Jesuit missionaries also built homes including the one where the hero of Argentine independence, José de San Martín was born.
General José de San Martín, one of the most important Argentine patriots,
often called "The father of our Nation".
He contributed to the independence of Argentina, Chile and Perú,
from the Spanish domination.
Tourists in Yapeyú can pay a visit to San Martín's birthplace . The house was built in 1627 by the Jesuits and little remains of the original structure, but the ruined walls have been preserved in a temple that was constructed around them. The temple-style building that encases San Martín’s birthplace was built in 1938 and is an example of colonial architecture typical of the era.

Yapeyú town also has a tourist information office, an amphitheatre and a quiet beach on the Uruguay river which is a safe and very pleasant place to bathe and escape the heat. You can also take a look around the interesting Museum of San Martín where this Argentine hero’s personal possessions, uniforms and weapons are on display.
