Ruins of Jesus

Visit the spectacular ruins of Jesus!!!

They're worth a visit!!!
The Jesuit ruins of Jesus are located in the department of Itapúa, Paraguay.  They are one of the best-preserved of the Jesuit reductions.  To access this reduction you should take Route 6, which is born in the city of Encarnación and then move across unpaved roads. The Church of Jesus Reduction was under construction at the time of the Jesuits' expulsion from the Province of Río de la Plata.

The ruins of these missions reflect a form of religious life and education marked by a very singular style in which both, the Europeans and the guaranis could live together learning ones from the others.

Jesuit Ruins of San Ignacio Miní

The Jesuit Missions of the Guaranis are the archeological remains of towns created by the Company of Jesus. The towns existed between 1609 and 1818, and aimed to socially, culturally and religiously elevate the local Guarani Indians. They also provided protection and economic stability. Originally there were 30 missions, spread out over Paraguay, Argentina and Brazil.

San Ignacio Miní, at Misiones, Argentina

In 1984 the ruins were declared as World Heritage Site by UNESCO,
and currently hold the Jesuit museum San Ignacio Miní.

VISIT THIS PLACE FULL OF HISTORY!!!

San Ignacio Miní was one of the many reductions founded in the 17th century by the Jesuits in America during theSpanish colonial period near present-day San Ignacio valley, some 60 km north of Posadas, in the province of Misiones, Argentina.

Ruins of the Holy Trinity, in Encarnación, Paraguay

Don’t wait to visit these spectacular ruins!

Ruins of the Jesuit reduction
"Holy Trinity of Paraná"

These red-stoned ruins are the physical remnants of a thriving Jesuit missionary base from the 17th and 18th centuries.
The Jesuit Reductions were all built to a common plan. The church dominated the main square, with all other buildings –colleges, hospitals, housing– located on the remaining three sides. In the centre of the square, there was a cross and a statue of the mission’s patron saint. This plan is quite evident in the Trinidad Reduction where a substantial amount of the buildings remain. The main church, some living quarters and workshops still stand. The church boasts a baptismal font, an elaborate pulpit and numerous statues and stone carvings. These ruins are being restored and maintained constantly.
Now, centuries later, the order and even purposefulness of the place can still be felt. It is a well-organised place. It was a place of life. It was a place of community. It was a place that offered a different model of interaction between the European settlers and native peoples. Centred on the church, the community, both Jesuit and native, lived, worked and prayed together. A sense of this remains.

 The Three Borders

View of the juncture of the Iguazu and Parana rivers and the three borders
(Argentina, Brazil y Paraguay)

You should also visit the Three Borders Zone, a landmark with a view of the place where the rivers Paraná and Iguazú meet to form the borders of Brazil, Argentina, and Paraquay.  The rivers joinig here -Paraná and Iguazú-create a single river, which leads to the Iguazú falls.

The Three Borders Landmark includes three obeliscs painted with the colours
corresponding to the flags of the three countries: Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay.

Yapeyú town in Corrientes

Entrance to the town

Yapeyú is a historic town for two main reasons: the Jesuit Mission that was founded there in the early 17th century and because it is the birthplace of General José Francisco de San Martín, the famous Argentine revolutionary.

Yapeyú town is located on the east of Corrientes, a province in the north east of Argentina.  It is settled on the banks of the Uruguay river.

The Jesuits built this settlement and transformed the village into an important agricultural, cultural and manufacturing centre, with 80 heads of cattle, a shipyard and a literature and music school. The Jesuit missionaries also built homes including the one where the hero of Argentine independence, José de San Martín was born.

General José de San Martín, one of the most important Argentine patriots,
often called "The father of our Nation".
He contributed to the independence of Argentina, Chile and Perú,
from the Spanish domination.

Tourists in Yapeyú can pay a visit to San Martín's birthplace . The house was built in 1627 by the Jesuits and little remains of the original structure, but the ruined walls have been preserved in a temple that was constructed around them. The temple-style building that encases San Martín’s birthplace was built in 1938 and is an example of colonial architecture typical of the era.

Yapeyú town also has a tourist information office, an amphitheatre and a quiet beach on the Uruguay river which is a safe and very pleasant place to bathe and escape the heat. You can also take a look around the interesting Museum of San Martín where this Argentine hero’s personal possessions, uniforms and weapons are on display.
